If you have ever taken apart a small camera, a vehicle camera, or a camera module on a drone, you may have seen a tiny lens with an outer thread diameter of only 12 mm—smaller than a coin. This is an M12 lens, also called a trigger lens, because it is usually screwed directly into the lens mount on the camera’s mainboard.
The reason M12 lenses can be made so small is, first, that the sensors they serve are not large to begin with. Many small devices use 1/3-inch, 1/4-inch, or even smaller sensors, which have correspondingly small image planes, so the lens does not need large elements to cover them. Second, the structure of an M12 lens is relatively simple: it usually has only a few lens elements and a short barrel, with an overall length of just over ten millimeters. It lacks the complex mechanical structure of an auto-iris lens, and the aperture is mostly fixed, which also reduces both size and cost.
But small does not mean simple. The back-focus adjustment range of an M12 lens is very limited, and during assembly the distance between the lens and the sensor must be controlled very precisely; even a slight deviation can make the image blurry. Therefore, these lenses actually have high requirements for manufacturing precision and assembly processes. Many M12 lenses also use all-glass elements to ensure good clarity and weather resistance even in a compact form factor.
M12 lenses are commonly found in vehicle backup cameras, drone aerial cameras, action cameras, smart access control systems, and various miniature surveillance devices. Their advantages are small size, light weight, and controllable cost, making them suitable for mass integration into compact products. Of course, their aperture and field-of-view options are relatively fixed, so they are not well suited to professional scenarios that require frequent zooming or wide-range adjustment. Understanding their positioning makes it clear why so many small devices choose to use them.

The M12 lens has an outer thread diameter of only 12 mm and screws directly onto the camera mount on the mainboard. Its miniaturization is achieved through a small sensor and a simple structure. It has a fixed aperture and a limited back-focus adjustment range, and requires high assembly precision. It is commonly used in compact devices such as automotive, drone, and access-control systems, with advantages including a small size, light weight, and suitability for mass integration.
