Many surveillance cameras have the function of switching between day and night modes. During the day, they capture color images, and at night, they switch to black-and-white mode while turning on infrared lights for supplementary illumination. However, many people have noticed that the same camera lens focuses quite clearly during the day, but the image becomes blurry when in infrared mode at night. This is not because the camera is broken, but because the lens has a different "focusing habit" for infrared light compared to visible light.
In simple terms, when visible light and infrared light pass through the same piece of glass, the angle they bend at is slightly different, and the final landing position is also different. Ordinary CCTV lenses are designed based on visible light during the day. When infrared light enters at night, the focus shifts a little, and the image naturally becomes blurry. Some lenses need to be adjusted on the focusing ring again at night or remain blurry all the time.
Infrared correction lenses are designed to take into account both visible light and infrared light simultaneously, ensuring that the focus of both light sources is as close to the same position as possible. This way, when the camera switches from day to night, the image does not suddenly become blurry, eliminating the need for manual refocusing. For scenarios where it is necessary to clearly see license plates, faces, or perimeter conditions at night, lenses with infrared correction can save a lot of trouble.
