Interpretation of MTF Curve: How Does That Roller Coaster Like Line Expose the True Resolution of the Lens?
When selecting lenses, MTF curve is the most essential but often misunderstood tool. It appears to be a line with ups and downs, but in reality, it is a "physical examination report" of the camera's ability to reproduce different spatial frequencies (detail thickness). The solid and dashed lines closer to the top of the chart represent the level of transmission of meridional and sagittal textures, respectively; The earlier the curve collapses, the faster the high-frequency details decay. If the "S" and "T" lines diverge too much, it will indicate obvious astigmatism - the uniformity of the image edges will be affected.
